What to look out for when buying an HD set top box

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/images/200909/mh_comcastbox_01_500.jpgIt can be a confusing process trying to narrow down your choices when it comes to selecting the right freeview hd box for your needs. With so many different boxes on the market from a number of different manufacturers, it’s important to do your research before you commit to one particular choice. Here are a few things to take into account:

How much does it cost?

The first thing that will strike you when it comes to set top boxes is the sheer number available. There’s something for every budget, so if you’re looking for value for money don’t be fooled into paying over the odds for a top-of-the-line box if it does essentially the same job as one you could get for half the price. Both Freesat and Freeview set top boxes can be picked up relatively cheaply if you shop around.

Which channels will you get?

Not all set top boxes are equal, so make sure you know what you’re buying. Each box will be compatible with one particular content provider with differing HD output, so be sure that the machine you plump for will give you the channels you desire. A Freesat HD or Freeview HD box will allow you to view content for free after your one-off payment for the box, while Virgin Media and Sky HD boxes offer a higher number of HD channels but come with a significant monthly subscription charge. Research your options and see which one works best for you.

What functionality does it offer?

You have a choice when buying your set top box: pay a lower amount for a basic box that will simply provide the content, or pay a little more and get a box that will offer greater functionality. It’s possible to buy digital TV recorders with a Freeview or Freesat tuner built in, allowing users to both receive content and record it for consumption at a later date.

How many tuners does it have?

If you’re going for a digital TV recorder version, then it’s important to check how many tuners the box has. If it only has a single tuner then you won’t be able to watch a different channel while recording. If it has two tuners, you’ll be able to record one channel while watching another – or record two channels at a time if you’re going to be away from the TV.

What does it look like?

It won’t be important to everyone, but have a think about if the specific box you’re thinking about buying will fit in with the aesthetic of your living room. It might be the case that you can get a similar box with a sleeker look for a similar price if you shop around, so make sure you’ve scouted out all of your options.
